An area rich in cultural traditions that due to its versatility is able to offer a number of different activities for each season meeting all of your vacation expectations. There is something for everyone: rest and relaxation, health and wellbeing, as well as a vast assortment of outdoor sporting activities. It is hard to find an area as geographically privileged as Trentino. It is endowed with a variety of outstanding natural resources: lakes, streams, waterfalls, woods, meadows and above all fascinating mountain ranges. Among them, the incomparable majesty of the Dolomites, which in 2009 were added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Three natural parks lie in the region which offer exciting outdoor activities, educational workshops and a chance to learn about nature preservation and eco-sustainability. If you are looking for intimate contact with the mountains, there are various mountain paths with breathtaking views along with numerous mountain bike trails. Bikers can choose among 400 km of bike paths. If you are looking for a health and wellness experience, look no further than the Health Circuit, which includes eight thermal spas in the Trentino region – among which the Levico and Vetriolo Spa Centres – each with its own curative mountain spring water.
The region’s calendar is full of exciting high-level sporting events and cultural activities: “Sounds of the Dolomites“, a summer music festival high up in one of the world’s most beautiful mountains; various museum initiatives (among which the Mart – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art – one of the most important Italian contemporary art museums); and additional programs focusing on the richness of the province’s historical artwork.
This short description cannot overlook enogastronomy, yet another abundant resource evident throughout the province. A wealth of exquisite wines, charming restaurants and local delicacies all distinguishable by their high standard of authenticity, excellence and quality which characterize the region. Highlight your vacation by taking the not-to-miss gastronomic tour along the “Strada di Vino e dei sapori” (The Roads of Wine and Flavours) that winds through the Adige valley.
Valsugana and Lagorai
Only ten kilometers to the east from Trento, the Valsugana – a valley that epitomizes Trentino beauty with its lakes, mountains and thermal springs – will surprise you with its historical traditions and friendliness.
No doubt, the Caldonazzo and Levico lakes characterize the territory. These beautiful bathing spots not only offer well-equipped lakefront beaches, but are also perfect for sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing, swimming and fishing. You can also enjoy watching the exciting national and international boat races and other sporting competitions.
The Spa Centres in Levico, Vetriolo and Roncegno, which boast highly mineralized water with therapeutic traces of iron and arsenic specifically indicated in the treatment of stress, anxiety and inflammatory conditions, are ideal if you are looking for a relaxing vacation where you can rediscover your health and well-being.
The “Via del Brenta” (Brenta Road), a long flat bike path that runs from Pergine to Bassano del Grappa, cuts through the area. “Bicigrills” (multipurpose stations that offer food and drink, maintenance and biking info), bike repair stations and refreshment stands span along the path that winds through apple and corn fields and by ancient castles in Pergine and Ivano Fracena. Mountain bike lovers will enjoy Dolomites Lagorai Bike circuit.
An infinite amount of options exist for excursionists and trekkers with itineraries that cover the Lagorai chain and the Vezzena Plateau and present an opportunity to visit old Austro-Hungarian forts from the World War I era. Val Campelle and Val Calamento with the splendid WWF nature sanctuary are also worth discovering.
Moreover, the Valsugana is home to part of the E5 European walking route: this path connects France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy. And yet another historical connection between Germany and the Adriatic Sea via the Valsugana is the newly refurbished north-south Roman road, the Via Claudia Augusta, lined with plenty of archaeological sites and historical landmarks.
The Ippovia horse trail, which consists of a ring-shaped route divided into 16 stages, passes through the Valsugana on the Lagorai mountain chain. An entire network of equestrian centers, alpine refuges and well-equipped shepherd huts have been added along the way ensuring adequate services and assistance.
A few must sees are the tour of the old mines in Calceranica and the open-air contemporary art museum of Artesella, where artists create their works out of natural materials, such as stones, leaves and branches.
Some of the main summer attractions include events like Sleepless Night and the Magic of the Little Fruits, located in the town center of Pergine and the “Palio del Brenta” a historical commemoration held in Borgo Valsugana. In the winter season, the traditional Christmas Market adds flair and charm to Levico Terme.
When winter arrives, the Panarotta ski area, located 12 km from Levico Terme, is the best option for families due to the abundance of gentle runs, the two ski schools and a ski-kindergarten.
Cross-country skiers can choose among the ring-shaped track of the Val dei Mocheni or the Vezzena Plateau area.
